Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema recently made a stunning announcement. It was an important announcement from the perspective of Zambian law. In his announcement that was made on the occasion of Africa Day, President Hichilema announced his quest towards completely abolishing the death penalty row. Since this announcement, widespread support has been poured in towards the President’s decision. One of them is Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, noted businessman and philanthropist who is one of the most successful venture specialists in Zambia. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani has more than four decades of business experience. Apart from his successful business ventures such as Mahtani Group of Companies and Finsbury Investments, he is also known for his philanthropic contributions such as Prison Fellowship Zambia, a noted Christian Outreach Program dedicated towards providing transparent criminal justice, fundamental human rights, basic human dignity as well as path to achieve redemption by dedicating themselves towards the service of the gods. As such, Dr. Mahtani owned Prison Fellowship has extended their full support towards this decision from the Zambian President and stated that Prison Fellowship will provide full legal and regulatory support to ensure that the announcement turns into a reality.

Dr. Rajan Mahtani, while supporting the Zambian President’s announcement, stated that the concept of death penalty does not hold any significance in the present society and economy and the Zambian government will not benefit from the archaic law. According to the insights provided by Dr. Mahtani, more than 380 prisoners including around 30 women are looking forward to capital punishment throughout various Zambian prisons. Considering the truth that they are now not aware about their execution date, each day is a dreadful occasion for them. Another fact is that the circumstance of Zambian prisons is extremely degrading and questionable. Dr. Guy Scott visited the Mukobeko Maximum jail and considered the circumstance of these prisons as hell. This has forced the Zambian Government to start the initiative of strategic decongestion of prisons. This initiative further aligns with the President’s decision, a step in the right direction.
