Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani Promotes Law Education In Zambia With His Award

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a known businessman in Zambia. His reputation of an honest and ethical businessman has only increased over the years. Since his early business ventures, Dr. Rajan Mahtani established numerous successful businesses such as Mahtani Group of Companies, Finsbury Investments and Finance Bank Zambia. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is also known for his several philanthropic contributions across several fields such as education, environment, correction facilities, community development and many more. In the field of education, Dr. Mahtani has achieved a pioneer status with his significant philanthropic contributions. One of these contributions included development of the Steven Malama award. This award was instituted by Finance Bank Zambia on behalf of Dr. Rajan Mahtani, with the purpose of honoring the late Steven Malama. Steven Malama was a distinguished and notable legal professional in Zambia, known for his significant contributions towards legal fraternity. His contributions were instrumental in persuading government in the merger of two different bars, barristers bar and solicitors bar, into a single bar. With this merger, a greater number of legal professionals were able to affiliate with a recognized bar for providing legal services.

The Steven Malama award was instituted in the year 2012 and was given for the first time in 2013. Since then, the award has become an annual event, given to the top graduating student from the Zambian Institute of Advanced Legal Education. The graduating student also needs to qualify for bar in their first attempt. The latest award was given to Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba for the year 2018-19. The student, after receiving this award, thanked Dr. Rajan Mahtani by writing an article which was later published in the ‘Reader’s Forum’ of the Daily Mail. In this article, Emmanuel shared his gratitude towards Dr. Mahtani for his significant contributions. The Steven Malama award carries a plaque, a certificate and an award money of K15,000 to the deserving students.
