2018-19 Steven Malama Award Given To Winning Candidate From Ziale

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman, philanthropist and charity worker in Zambia. For many decades, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has been working towards development of the Zambian nation. At one side is his companies such as Finsbury Investments and Mahtani Group of Companies that are known for their ethical and transparent business practices. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani is known for his charitable and philanthropic activities across several sectors and industries. Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s contributions in the field of education is well-known. Dr. Rajan Mahtani in collaboration with the Finance Bank Zambia established the Steven Malama award in the year 2012. This award was established by Dr. Mahtani for honouring late Steven Malama, a well-known legal advisor and close friend of Dr. Mahtani. Late Steven Malama is particularly known for his significant contribution in the field of law. He along with his fellow influencers persuaded the Government of Zambia to merge two distinct bars, the Barrister’s Bar and the Solicitor’s bar into a single bar. After this merger, law enthusiasts, legal students and professionals are now able to take the affiliation in a much easier manner.

The Steven Malama award was given for the first time in 2013. Since then, the award is presented to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education every year, for topping the law program for the year and qualifying for bar in their first attempt. The award is now presented to the deserving candidates every year. Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba won this prestigious award for the year 2018-19. He was given the award by Dr. Rajan Mahtani himself along with a certificate and prize money worth K15,000. This prize money is awarded to the deserving candidates every year and has been extremely helpful in furthering their careers. After winning the award, Emmanuel wrote an article thanking Dr. Mahtani for his contributions which was later published at the Daily Mail.
