Finsbury Investments Under Dr. Mahtani’s Leadership Establishes Steven Malama Award

Apart from being one of the most respect businessman in Zambia, Dr. Rajan Mahtani is popular for many other positive contributions. One of these contributions has been in the field of education. Dr. Rajan Mahtani is the Chairman of the Finance Bank Zambia which launched the Steven Malama award in honour of the late Steven Malama, a pioneer in the legal sector of Zambia. The award was established in 2013 and since then, it is given on an annual basis to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. In order to qualify for the award, the top graduating student must also qualify the bar in their first attempt.

The award honours the memory and legacy of late Steven CM Malama, a distinguished practitioner of law, Bar luminary as well as role model for many within the Zambian legal fraternity. One of the most significant contributions by the late Steven Malama was persuading the Zambian government to create a legislation that would merge the two distinct bars, the Barristers Bar and the Solicitors bar, into one single Bar. This merger was made with the objective of ensuring that all legal professional within the nation could affiliate and are allowed to practice law without limitations.

For the year 2018-19, the award was received by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba, who graduated with Bar in hi first attempt. While receiving the award, Kaluba shared an article later published at Daily Mail’s Readers Forum. In this article, Kaluba thanked Dr. Mahtani for his significant contribution. The award not only generates awareness and recognition for the top student, it also provides them with numerous future opportunities such as dream career and working with top legal institutions across the nation. The award carries a plaque, a certificate and a prize money of K15,000, helping deserving students achieve their dreams without financial constraints. Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s contributions have always been significant for the development of Zambian society and economy.
