Justice Mumba Malila Testifies Before Court, Clarifies Dr. Mahtani’s Innocence In 2012 Case

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman and philanthropist in Zambia. His companies such as Mahtani Group of Companies and Finsbury Investments have made a name for themselves. At the same time, Dr. Mahtani is often targeted by conspirators and those who are either jealous of his popularity or want to see his hard-earned businesses fall. These are also the individuals and groups engaging in corrupt and unethical business practices.

In this testimony, Supreme Court Justice Mumba Malila revealed a similar situation wherein the tribunal gave the judgment on the 2012 case against Dr. Rajan Mahtani. This was despite all the evidence and testimonials supporting Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s claims. Even Justice Mumba Malila, who was the Attorney General during that time, requested the tribunal to make the case ‘nolle prosequi’ or null and void as it was against public policies. However, no such actions were taken. In his testimony, Justice Mumba Malila clearly stated that this is the case of misdirected and influenced decision making which is rampant in Zambia. As a result of a few powerful but corrupt politicians and businessmen, the entire legal system of Zambia is suffering. The major loss in such situations is for transparent and honest businessmen like Dr. Rajan Mahtani, who despite several hardships and unjustified court orders stay ethical and act according to the rules of business ethics.

The testimonial from Justice Mumba Malila has opened new lines of discussion as well as new lines of action for the Zambian government. It is time for the government to pull up their socks and start removing unwanted, illegal and corrupt business practices, individuals, groups and even organizations which are weighing the reputation of the Zambian government downwards. It is to be seen whether the Zambian government will re-open the case of 2012 based on this testimony or not. However, it is clear that the legal system of the Zambian nation requires cleansing from corrupt and unethical individuals.
